Where do you go to school and what are you studying towards?

I just finished my first year of my master’s degree in Science in Public Policy and Management program at Carnegie Mellon University H. John Heinz III College where I’m focusing on data and spatial analytics.

What attracted you to Reinvestment Fund for a summer internship?

I first heard about Reinvestment Fund via the Market Value Analysis (MVA) when I was working for the Urban Redevelopment Authority in Pittsburgh, PA. I was interested in how they aggregated multiple administrative and census level data to help inform local community members how their city is doing and how the MVA can be used to inform public policy.

What are some of the things you will be working on for Reinvestment Fund during your internship? What do you hope to learn from your internship here?

I am currently working on collecting and organizing data for a project in the northside area of Pittsburgh. My individual project is analyzing real estate sales data in Philadelphia over 20 years and examining predictors that lead to future investor purchasing activity. I am continuing to learn more about the different data that the Census puts out along with the vast and interesting databases housed in PolicyMap.

Share something interesting you have learned about Reinvestment Fund or the industry in your time here.

I am learning all the best practices to store and query data, plus it is exciting to deepen my knowledge in Structured Query Language (SQL). I have also learned more about the categories (housing, community-based facilities, commercial spaces, and food commerce) that make up the loan portfolio and how Reinvestment Fund aims to improve the quality of life for residents. These are all important assets that contribute to a strong community.

Is there anything else that you would like to share that we didn’t ask you?

I enjoy riding my bike down the Schuylkill river trail and reading all the blue historical markers in the area. They are all so fascinating and provide a small glimpse of life back in the day.
