Where do you go to school and what are you studying towards?
I graduated from Boston University in 2012, where I received my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting. Currently, I am in the process of completing my master’s degree in Public Policy with concentrations in Social Policy and Finance at Rutgers University.
What attracted you to Reinvestment Fund for a summer internship?
I first learned about Reinvestment Fund through my Urban Redevelopment course at Rutgers. Ira Goldstein and Adam Steinberg delivered a presentation on their work related to the Mount Holly Gardens case study analysis. I was blown away, and I wanted to know more, so I did some additional research. I was impressed by Reinvestment Fund’s commitment to improving low-income communities across the country by increasing access to economic, educational, and housing opportunities. I sought an internship that was not only interesting, but one that would also complement my interests in social policy, finance, and community development. The opportunity with HFFI was just that, a public-private partnership that uses economic development to improve access to healthier food options in low-income urban and rural communities throughout the country.
What are some of the things you will be working on for Reinvestment Fund during your internship? What do you hope to learn from your internship here?
This summer, I am working with the Healthy Food Financing Initiative, where I will manage program files, participate in program design and implementation, and conduct research related to food policy and food systems. Overall, I hope to strengthen my writing, research, and analytical skills while also learning the necessary skills to be successful in the community/economic development field.
Share something interesting you have learned about Reinvestment Fund or the industry in your time here.
I knew the Reinvestment Fund is one of the larger CDFI’s in the country, but I did not know how large their asset base is. I am impressed by the breadth of Reinvestment Fund’s work and the various projects they are involved in across the country.
Is there anything else that you would like to share that we didn’t ask you?
I played basketball and tennis growing up, so I am very active and into sports. A lot of my free time is spent watching basketball, football, baseball, tennis, American football, and my Dad is trying to get me into cricket. I am from Boston, so I am a huge fan of the Celtics, Patriots, and Red Sox. I also follow the English Premier League and La Liga football, the English National Team, Serena Williams, and Novak Djokovic.
