Policy Solutions Intern

Where do you go to school and what are you studying towards?

I graduated with my undergraduate degree in Community Development at Temple University, with minors in Political Science, General Business, and Geographic Information Systems Certificate.

I’ll be starting my Master of City and Regional Planning at the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University in fall 2018. My ultimate academic goal is to pursue a Ph.D. in City Planning to continue researching economic development and technology access in low-income communities.

What attracted you to Reinvestment Fund for a summer internship?

I learned about Reinvestment Fund during my community development finance course. Their work in Philadelphia was remarkable from initiatives in affordable housing to grocery stores, so I set out to learn more about CDFIs. After working in the lending department at a small CDFI, I sought an opportunity to work for a larger organization—one specifically focused on economic development in low-income communities. I thought Reinvestment Fund’s Policy Solutions would be the perfect complement to my community development degree and experience in GIS.

What are some of the things you will be working on for Reinvestment Fund during your internship? What do you hope to learn from your internship here?

My summer project is working on rural Low Supermarket Access (LSA) data to identify characteristics of rural areas with a full-service grocery store to inform future strategies to food access. I am also working on determining if a decrease in LSA score is associated with improved health outcomes and if predominately minority block groups are associated with higher LSA scores.

In addition, I’m assisting with the Philadelphia child care analysis for 2018. So far, I’ve been working on survey collection and cleaning data for the analysis. I’m hoping to learn more about rural food access throughout the US as well as the state of child care in Philadelphia.

Overall, I hope to improve my data analysis skills, data management, and SQL skills.

Share something interesting you have learned about Reinvestment Fund or the industry in your time here.

I haven’t been here very long, but I didn’t know Reinvestment Fund was involved in various projects all over the country. It’s been so cool working on projects throughout the country, as well as attending childcare meetings in Philadelphia. I’ve been meeting cool people doing amazing things for the city.

Is there anything else that you would like to share that we didn’t ask you?

I’m allergic to cats so I’m an avid dog sitter (find me on Rover). I’ve presented research on Uber, but I prefer riding SEPTA so much so I’m on the SEPTA Youth Advisory Council.
