Jonathon Tavares
Lending & Portfolio Management Intern

Where do you go to school and what are you studying towards?
Currently I am a sophomore in the five year co-op program at Drexel University. I am working towards my bachelor of science in business administration with a concentration in finance.

What attracted you to Reinvestment Fund for a summer internship?
My initial attraction towards Reinvestment Fund was the ability to gain valuable real world experience. Reinvestment Fund’s socially motivated strategy and mission is what further intrigued me to this particular internship. This opportunity allows for my skills and knowledge in business that I have acquired thus far in the classroom at Drexel, to flourish and be utilized to further the impact that Reinvestment Fund makes on a daily basis with a fresh and innovative approach.

What are some of the things you will be working on for Reinvestment Fund during your internship? What do you hope to learn from your internship here?
This summer I will be assisting with the ongoing management of all portfolios; including housing, commercial real estate, community facility, food commerce, healthcare and more. My role on the portfolio management team includes identifying key borrower loan covenants and documenting the loan covenants in both internal and borrower facing formats. I will identify and catalog key borrower information and health indicators; including, but not limited to debt service coverages, loan to value ratios, days cash on hand, etc. Additionally, I will assist in the maintenance of credit files for all loans. This includes following up with borrowers to obtain current financial statements, tax returns and other documents as required in the credit terms. Finally, I will assemble, analyze, and present information regarding portfolio trends, statistics, and performance. At the Reinvestment Fund I hope to learn the ins and outs of a real business setting. I would also like to broaden my skill set in excel and various databases used that help businesses grow and function.

Share something interesting you have learned about Reinvestment Fund or the industry in your time here.
At the Reinvestment Fund, thus far, I have learned so much it is difficult to pin down. I have learned the importance of data, organized data. I have learned through site visits how far Reinvestment Fund’s impact in changing so many people’s daily lives. I have researched and prepared a quarterly review of two of our portfolios that was presented in front of the loan committee. As for the industry, the environment, people, passion, and love of the work is unmatched by anything I have ever encountered.

Is there anything else that you would like to share that we didn’t ask you?
Every day at Reinvestment Fund is new and exciting, engaging and educational. The work environment is incredible. Everyone is extremely welcoming and always willing to help when asked. I am very thankful to have been granted this opportunity. I hope that my work has a lasting impact on efficiency going forward and I hope that whoever replaces me next summer has some “big shoes to fill.”
