Interns

Josh Davidson
PolicyMap Intern

Where do you go to school and what are you studying towards?
I go to the University of Pennsylvania and I am working towards a Masters in City Planning.

What attracted you to Reinvestment Fund for a summer internship?
The organization has a clear, grounded approach to synthesizing data analysis with social change, in the pursuit of more equitable cities. I want to be able to contribute to this project.

What are some of the things you will be working on for Reinvestment Fund during your internship? What do you hope to learn from your internship here?
I will be working on adding new datasets to PolicyMap including longitudinal economic data, organizing data structures to promote ease of access for our users, and writing blog posts about interesting findings in PolicyMap’s extensive data layers. In the technical realm, I hope to learn more about geospatial data analysis and management and write code in SQL to perform these processes. More generally, I hope to learn how to better bring these technical analyses to the ongoing work of building stronger communities in our cities.

Share something interesting you have learned about Reinvestment Fund or the industry in your time here.
I was very intrigued to learn about the “iterative” approach that Reinvestment Fund takes across the organization’s work, be it lending to promote affordable housing, or market value analyses to support community development policy. By constantly seeking to learn from past examples, and evaluate their own process, Reinvestment Fund has been able to not only strengthen their own projects, but form wholly new subsidiaries, like Development Partners or PolicyMap.

Is there anything else that you would like to share that we didn’t ask you?
Last summer I bicycled from Washington, DC to Eugene, Oregon (with a train across North Dakota). This summer, I planted my first garden.
