Interns

Lauren Parker
PolicyMap & Policy Solutions Intern

Where do you go to school and what are you studying towards?
I’m pursuing a dual Master’s degree in City Planning and Urban Spatial Analytics at the University of Pennsylvania. My concentration is Community and Economic Development, with interests in just and affordable housing, cooperatively-owned enterprises, and neighborhood impacts of the criminal justice system.

What attracted you to Reinvestment Fund for a summer internship?
I learned of PolicyMap a few years before I started graduate school, so when I saw that an intern position was available, I was excited to apply. I’m primarily interested in how data can thoughtfully inform policy decisions so working in both the PolicyMap and Policy Solutions departments is a great opportunity.

What are some of the things you will be working on for Reinvestment Fund this summer? What do you hope to learn from your internship here?
This summer I’ll be developing indexes of racial diversity and residential segregation to publish on PolicyMap, as well as analyzing data for various housing studies for Policy Solutions. I’m looking forward to learning more about the Market Value Analysis (MVA) models and creating more elegant SQL code.

Share something interesting you have learned about Reinvestment Fund or the industry in your first few weeks here.
I live in West Philly and am a member of the Mariposa Food Co-op, so it was interesting to learn more about Reinvestment Fund’s role in the financing of the expansion of this grocery store. Also, I wish I could accurately convey in words how beautiful PolicyMap’s collection of databases is. For a data nerd such as myself, it’s like being a kid in a candy store.

Anything you would like to add?
When I’m not at work or studying, I spend a lot of my time playing music in a local folk band, Silverton. Also, I love figuring out how things work and are made – whether it be in building instruments, fermenting various vegetables, or fixing odd things around the house. Finally, I’m a not-so-secret birder, so on weekends you’ll often find me in forested or marshy areas.
