Walter’s Bath House

Reinvestment Fund is financing the transformation of the historic Walter’s Bathhouse and adjacent fire station in the Pigtown neighborhood of Southwest Baltimore.

The development will create eight apartments and one ground floor retail space. Dating back more than 100 years, the bathhouse was part of a network of public bathhouses in the city.

SAA | EVI, a minority entrepreneur led development company, is adapting the vacant, historic properties as a pedestrian-oriented, mixed use development at a highly visible location along Pigtown’s Main Street corridor. They are partnering with the Bricklayers and Craftworkers Union on this project.

Pigtown is a neighborhood that has long been on the cusp of revitalization but has only recently seen new commercial occupancy and higher home prices. It is one of 7 neighborhoods that are part of the Southwest Partnership, a community quarterback modeled after Central Baltimore Partnership. The SW Partnership engaged with its constituent neighborhoods and anchor institutions and commissioned studies on both commercial development and housing needs. The redevelopment of key sites on the Main Street corridors was identified as a key strategy as was providing much needed market rate housing in the neighborhood.

Walter’s Bathhouse is also a pilot site for a job training program being developed by Bricklayers in partnership with the project’s general contractor Commercial Construction, the City’s Office of Employment and Training, and the developer – SAA | EVI. The project-related apprenticeships and training will be available to local youth prepared to help rebuild their neighborhoods and create a career in construction.
